Cognition's SWE-1.6 is a proprietary model built for software engineering agents, made generally available in Windsurf on April 7, 2026. Cognition says it was post-trained from scratch to jointly optimize intelligence and model UX, reducing overthinking and looping, encouraging parallel tool use, reducing improper terminal reliance, and requiring less user input. At launch, a Fireworks-served version running at 200 tokens per second was offered free for three months, while SWE-1.6 Fast was served by Cerebras at 950 tokens per second for paying users; Cognition described both versions as providing the same intelligence.
