Granite 4.0 1B is IBM's dense, decoder-only Transformer instruct model in the Granite 4.0 Nano family, released on October 28, 2025 for on-device and research use. It was fine-tuned from Granite 4.0 1B Base with permissively licensed open-source instruction data and internally collected synthetic data using supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, and model merging, and supports instruction following and tool calling. IBM releases the weights under Apache 2.0; the Nano models carry IBM's ISO 42001 certification and have native support in runtimes including vLLM, llama.cpp, and MLX.
